While the city of Austin and the real estate industry have come a long way in advocating for diversity in population, variety in housing, and equity overall, there is still much work to be done. Almost 50 years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act into law, prohibiting discriminatory practices. As REALTORS, we must remain community advocates for all of those around us — no matter race, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or disability.

There is no perfect answer to fixing the city’s fair housing and affordability issues, but Austin’s existing Land Development Code (written nearly 30 years ago when Austin’s population was a third of what it is today), addresses critical issues such as diminishing natural resources, household affordability, and access to healthy lifestyles. While it does address such issues, the Land Development Code is in need of amendments and should allow for prospering development and increased density. The CodeNEXT process has been a lengthy community conversation, but worthwhile in the end. I encourage you to subscribe for CodeNEXT updates, comment on the latest draft, and utilize other resources by visiting bit.ly/AustinCodeNEXT.
